The Ryan Lui Memorial Dinner
On the 24th May 2007, there was a memorial dinner held by the Cairns Branch of TocH, held at the St John's Anglican Church Hall, positioned at 179 Lake Street and Corner of Minnie Street Cairns QLD. There were about thirty five people attend the dinner to show their respects amongst these were, Major General Darryl Low-Choy (the National Toc-H President) and the new patron for St John's Anglican church.
There were also other important people who attended this dinner some of these were the youth ambassadors for 2007, along with some of the future ambassadors for 2008,
along with Alma Lui and other distinguished guests from far and wide.
We are proud to announce that one of the 2007 youth ambassadors Kalumn Lovelock hosted the dinner and spoke beautifully, presenting it with grace and determination which he learnt during the 2007 leadership course in Canberra. As Kalumn said "without the leadership camp I would not have been able to get up there and host." Also later while talking to other people/ possible youth ambassadors for 2008 it was stated by all of the 2007 ambassadors that it was a great experience that provided us with the willpower and courage to become better public speakers.
During the night Major General Darryl Low-Choy presented a speech that gave all the people attending a reason to think. Some of the areas he talked about are:
. The Characteristics of our evolving 21st Century Society
. The Post-Industrial World
- Globalisation
- Technological Change
- Tribalisation
. Implications for an Australian Society
- Firstly: the Changing Structure of our Society
- Population aging
- Family Structure
- Ethnic Composition & Diversity
- Secondly: Social Changes Affecting our Community
- Changing Nature of Employment and Work Patterns
- A "Technological Smart" Population
- Population Mobility
- Recreation and Leisure Time
- Thirdly: Changing Community Values and Commitments
- Fourthly: Changing Community Engagement
- Implications for Toc - H
Concluding his speech by saying "thank you for your attention and please enjoy the rest of your evening”. The light ceremony was done by Father Peter from the Mareeba Anglican Church, along with grace. The event ran from 7pm to about 9pm, dinner was great (thanks to the ladies that catered).
